A well written and styled resume gives you your best opportunity to land your dream job. In it’s simplest form your resume is your list of talents, skills and abilities and you will want to make this list as strong as possible to ensure that you have the highest chance of success in your job application.
The first and probably most important tip is to keep your resume concise and to the point. No recruiter wishes to wade through pages of long and boring sentences just to determine whether or not you are worth interviewing. Do not leave out important job roles, dates and facts but take care that you stay on the subject and do not ramble.
Use keywords effectively throughout your resume. For example, if you work in the field of finance, use words relating to this category. These could include financial, fiscal, profit and loss, balance sheet, accounting, revenue, margins and cost effectiveness. Strong use of industry language shows that you are competent with using this terminology and that it is familiar to you.
Keep your job titles precise. Do not choose to use a title such as Head of Finance & Accounting & Income when you can use a title such as Financial Controller. The average amount of time a recruiter will spend looking at a resume before deciding to read further or trash the document is approximately 6 seconds; you need to think smart in order to grab their attention in this short time frame.
Proofread your resume. And proofread your resume again. And if at all possible have a friend or colleague proofread your resume a third time. You don’t want to miss out on that job of a lifetime because of a simple spelling error.
Use bullet points to effectively convey information in an easily readable manner. The well thought out use of bullet points can greatly enhance the style of your resume. Do not make your entire resume a list but do judiciously chose to write sections of your resume in list format.
Find a resume template that you like and use it. The Internet is a great resource for free resume templates and there are hundreds to choose from. If you are new to resume writing it is far easier to use a template than to attempt to write the resume from scratch on a blank sheet of paper.
Put the most important information first. Begin with stating your area of expertise and use relevant keywords to highlight this. Include your core competencies at the top of the resume and follow through with your latest or current role. A recruiter does not want to start reading a resume that begins with your high school education back in the 90’s.
Ensure you keep your resume positive. You are wanting to convey that you are competent and able; negativity should not appear on your resume or cover letter in any format. Your sentences should guide the reader to the thought that you are the ideal candidate for the job – they do not want to read that you’re not sure whether you can perform the tasks required.
