How To Find Your Passion
Want to discover how to find your passion in life?
In this lesson you are going to learn the exact steps you need to take to figure out what you should do with your life. I will also include a set of questions (via our test or quiz) you can ask yourself that will help you gain more clarity.
Note: This article is not some airy fairy new-age rhetoric that has no application to your life. I am going to teach you the actual mechanics of how this works and will also share with you my own personal story of how I turned my passion into a 6-figure career with only an 8th grade education.
Step 1 – Keep It Simple & Have Fun
First and foremost, don’t let this overwhelm you. All too often people feel stressed out about figuring out what they should do with their life that it becomes this heavy burden that it actually detours you from finding your passion in life.
Take a deep breath.
And let it come through you naturally.
Step 2 – Follow Your Excitement
With all of the self improvement and new age rhetoric you hear out there about “following your passion”, what most people don’t talk about are the actual mechanics of how this all works. Rather than thinking of some big project or career (which in actuality is jumping too far ahead), you need to focus on small steps that you can immediately take that will set up a scenario for one of the X-Factors that I teach: synchronicity.
It’s through synchronicity that will allow the pieces of the puzzle to all start to come together. When you look at the story of any successful person, you will see that it was some small tinkering, a book, a class, or something that seemed “insignificant” that led to their ultimate success.
Steve Jobs took a calligraphy class that later on inspired him to start Apple.
So what you need to do is ask yourself this question:
What excites me right now?
Then do that and when that is over follow your next excitement and then the next one and so on. Have fun and play like a little child.
Have you ever seen kids play with one toy to the next?
A child will be fully present in the moment playing their game until they are done with it and then will quickly move on to the next thing without even thinking about it. Kids are naturally in tune with what excites them.
You need to rekindle that relationship with your inner child and play with one thing to the next and see what comes up for you along the way. I’ll show you how this worked in my life and took me from a depressed overweight teenager to a highly successful Madison Ave media executive in just a moment.
Step 3 – Focus On A Theme
Once you have found something that excites you, then focus on that theme:
Whatever it is that excites you, it will be part of an overarching theme that you can connect it with that will help you learn how to discover your passion in life.
The truth is that many of you are probably already doing something that is your passion but because of how society defines a “career,” you have (without knowing it) discounted it not realizing that you already found it but have minimized it thinking that “There is no way I could make money from doing this.”
You would be amazed at how much your subconscious rules your life without even knowing it. As someone who spent over ten years in advertising, trust me, your mind can be controlled a lot easier than you think.
Work vs Hobby
As you begin this process, it’s important to pay attention if any of these things feel more like your work or if they are a hobby. There is nothing wrong with creating your work life around your hobby.
I have a friend who loves to surf. That is all he wants to do. He is not interested in becoming a professional or getting sponsored or anything like that. He wants to surf every day and do it on his terms. So he moved down to Costa Rica, got a job as a waiter (at night time) so that he can surf all day.
He lives a very simple life but is extremely happy. In his world, he is successful.
This is why it is important that you have a clear understanding of what success means to you. Do not listen to what others define as being successful, listen your heart and do what works for you. If that means making a lot of money and working a high paying corporate job then so be it. But make sure it’s true for you.
How To Find Your Passion Test
Break out a piece of paper and pen (or open up a Word doc) and answer these questions:
1. What can you talk about all day without getting tired of it?
2. What do you love to learn about?
3. What products or services really excite you?
4. Who do you admire and why?
5. What do you want to accomplish before you die?
6. Who are your top three favorite companies? What do you love about them?
7. What problems are you good at solving?
After answering these questions, you should notice a theme. That theme should tell you what you are passionate about.
As a young teenager I was a mess: suicidal, depressed, overweight, angry, lost, confused, and so on. But at the age of 14 I found something that completely changed my life: music (electronic music to be precise.) I started going to these events back in 1991 and absolutely loved them. But in 1992 they had almost completely vanished.
One day I was with a friend of mine at an event (that we all hated) and began to talk about the “good ole days.” There was a small group of us reminiscing about how much we loved these types of events. So my one friend just says, “Lets throw one of these parties.” I immediately jumped in and said “Yes!”
I knew nothing about event production but just figured things out along the way. What I did have was an absolute passion for the music and the events themselves. Over the years these events grew and became very successful.
Along the way I stumbled into launching a music and lifestyle magazine based around these events and for the course of ten years I produced events and published a magazine.
After I lost my passion for this industry, I decided to follow my next passion which was wellness, personal development, and spirituality. One day I was reading an ad in one of the magazines I enjoyed and they had an ad looking for an advertising consultant. I immediately met with them and began working with them.
Within a year I became the top sales person there (out of 16) and the company was eventually bought by Gaiam, the largest wellness media company in that industry where I went to head up their media department in NYC making a six-figure income.
Mind you, I only have an 8th grade education. All of my success is based upon following my passion, trusting synchronicity, and learning by doing. I had no idea I would become an event producer, CEO of a magazine, and a director and publisher at a media company. My overarching theme was that I loved music and I loved wellness. It was those themes that allowed me to find my place within these industries.
I am not saying that this is exactly how it can work for you as each of you reading this will have your own story. But what I am saying is that if you follow your excitement and don’t sweat the details, opportunities will present themselves and then show you what you are supposed to be doing. But it has to start with you having fun and loving what you do first.
And by the way, if you look at any successful person (Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, John Mackey, Richard Branson, etc.), you will see that they were all passionate about an industry and wanted to solve a problem.
Once you figure out your passion, then all you have to do is ask yourself “How can I add value to this industry?”
Dream Maker Or Sharer?
When some people find their passion in life, it might turn out that you may want to start your own business. In life, you are either fulfilling your dream or supporting someone else’s.
There is nothing wrong with working with someone so long as you share the same dream. At the same time, don’t let the fear of starting your own business scare you into not trying. You live in a time that is the most easiest ever to take your idea and turn it into a business.
